Post-Abortion Self-Care

Abortion can be a physically, mentally, and emotionally traumatic process, so it is important to take proper care of yourself following the procedure. If you experience any lasting symptoms that concern you, contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these may be indications of complications.

After an abortion:

  • Make sure to rest
  • Drink water and other healthy fluids
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and minimize strenuous exercise
  • Refrain from vaginal sex for at least two weeks
  • Do not use tampons or insert anything into the vaginal canal for two weeks

Post-Abortion Complication Warning Signs

Abortion is a complex, invasive process and complications can occur. It is important to monitor your symptoms to ensure you are recovering satisfactorily.

If you have any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Bleeding lasting for more than 14 days1
  • Abnormal, heavy bleeding or passing large blood clots
  • Increased vaginal, foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain, redness, or swelling in the external genitalia (vulva)
  • Fever over 100 degrees
  • Intense abdominal pain or swelling
  • Sustained rapid heart rate

Common Post-Abortion Physical Effects

The majority of women will experience some physical effects after an abortion. Post-abortion physical symptoms can include:

  • Bleeding/spotting lasting between 14-21 days
  • Cramping
  • Drowsiness and dizziness
  • Vomiting

These are considered minor symptoms and will usually stop without additional medical treatment within a week. However, if your symptoms become severe, contact your doctor.

Common Post-Abortion Emotional Effects

Research has shown that abortion can contribute to emotional distress and increased mental health problems for some women. Abortion can be an extremely emotional process and can, in some cases, result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.2 Data has also suggested that women may experience increased levels of negative emotional responses like depression over time.

Other common post-abortion emotional effects may include:

  • Grief and sadness
  • Anxiety
  • Guilt or shame
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Regret

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you can talk to a nurse immediately or contact a licensed counselor. The National Hotline for Abortion Recovery is also available to assist you via phone: 866-482-5433 or online: www.nationalhelpline.org.
