Abortion Cost

Medical Abortion

Abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy either surgically or chemically by an abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion.1 If you are considering abortion, there are costs and fees you need to be aware of.

How Much Does an Abortion Cost?

Factors which can affect the cost of an abortion include:

  • Type of Abortion
  • Stage of Pregnancy
  • If You Have Health Insurance
  • Where You Receive Your Abortion

The average cost of a surgical abortion during the first trimester is $600. Costs for a surgical abortion in the second trimester increase, and range from $715 – $2,000. Abortion pill costs can average a range of $600 – $800.2 As pregnancy progresses and the fetus grows, abortion costs rise.

Depending on your age and the state you live in, some organizations offer online orders and home delivery of the abortion pill at a reduced cost. Some of these organizations use sliding scale pricing (the fee is adjusted based on the individual’s ability to pay) or partner with abortion funds to assist with cost coverage. Online abortion pills can average in the range of $100 – $800 depending on the provider and which state you live in.

Although these online organizations may offer abortion pills at lower costs, you should use extreme caution before taking the abortion pill until meeting with a licensed healthcare provider. Always consult with your doctor or a certified medical professional before undergoing an abortion to understand any personal health risks, address your concerns, and learn more about all your healthcare options.

Illegal International Abortion Pill Providers

Online abortion pill organization AidAccess offers abortion pill order and home delivery for $105-$150, depending on which state you reside in.3 However, In 2019, the FDA declared the unapproved and misbranded abortion pill drugs sold by AidAccess illegal. The distribution of these pills in AidAccess’ home abortion pill kits violates laws governing interstate commerce and using them can increase health risks to the women who take them.4

Does Insurance Cover Abortion?

Insurance coverage for abortion varies based on the state you live in and the type of insurance you have.

The Hyde Amendment bans federal Medicaid insurance coverage of abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or endangerment to the life of the mother. However, individual states do have the right to use their own funds to provide abortion funds to women who qualify for Medicaid.5 If you have private health insurance, you will need to contact your provider to learn about their policies on abortion coverage.

How Much Does Abortion Cost Without Insurance?

Since many private insurance companies do not cover abortion costs, many women end up paying the full abortion cost out of pocket. Abortion costs without insurance vary widely depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, the type of abortion, and the state you are in.

A study conducted from 2017-2020 found the following average median abortion costs without insurance in the United States:6

The Abortion Pill: $560
First Trimester Surgical Abortion: $575
Second Trimester Surgical Abortion: $895
